Spontaneous

As much as I'd like us to be, we aren't the spontaneous let's-go-have-a-few-hours-of-fun kind of family.

We like routine. At least the "alpha male" does :)

So tonight when I sort of half-asked, half-told Jeff that we were going on a 4 wheeler ride this weekend, he looked at me like I was crazy. He begrudgingly started to get ready with me and the kids running through the house like our hair was on fire we were so excited.

I figured it would be the kind of spontaneous idea Jeff would be all for.

That might have been the case, had I actually packed something for us to eat for dinner. Or realized the 4 wheelers were out of gas (I thought they still had some left from Labor Day). Or thought through what we were going to do with the dog.

Geez! Live a little.

Solutions? Crackers and fruit snacks (and In-n-Out afterwards). Bypass the long lines at Costco and hit the closest gas station to our house. And a laundry basket (and small prayer that Blu cooperates so I'm not left at the truck waiting for Jeff and the kids to come back).

The kids were pumped! What I didn't tell Jeff was I sort of planted this "spontaneous" idea in their heads as we left the house for work/daycare so they'd had a good 9 hours to get excited about going. I just forgot to tell Jeff.

Look out, "crazy drivers!"

Blu did great. She sat in the basket or laid down the entire way. I didn't worry about her at all. She loved exploring when we stopped for our feast of crackers and fruit snacks. And when we stopped for dinner at In-n-Out afterwards... she spotted every single abandoned french fry there was. But man, did she need a bath when we got home.

I don't know if I should be excited or sad that the fall leaves are starting to change colors. It sure is a beautiful sight but it also signals the end of summer days and "spontaneous" adventures.

After getting all the kids tucked in for bed, I gave Jeff a big kiss on the cheek and told him thanks for the fun evening. He smiled and said, "Yep. It was a good idea, Kay."

We just might have to give this spontaneous thing another try.

Me help Dad shed

Cole thinks he is hot stuff.

He also thinks he is a great helper.

As Jeff has been putting together his "man" shed - or the "4 wheeler's house" as the kids call it - Cole has taken it upon himself to provide that little extra helping hand.

I'm not sure he's actually helping. But it's all he talks about... "Me. Help Dad. Shed."

I'm just grateful that 1) the shed is almost done, 2) we haven't lost any fingers to power tool mishaps yet, and 3) Cole didn't climb up any ladders helping his Dad.
